Frequently Asked Questions

When should I hire a labor doula?

When to hire your doula is up to you. You have more options if you hire a doula early in the pregnancy. You can have a package with more prenatal visits/consultations; you will have more time to build a relationship so that your doula can better support you, and you will have more time to implement the knowledge shared into your pregnancy. Ideally, you should hire a doula prior to 30 weeks of pregnancy, but if you are past that time, you can still gain many of the benefits of having a doula.

Do you work with another doula as a backup?

If you prefer, I can arrange for a second doula to work with you during prenatal visits and/or attend your birth. I have a strong network of local doulas, ensuring you always have a backup doula available if you need one.

What if I want to or decide to have a medicated birth?

As your doula, I aim to adapt to and support the birthing of your philosophy and preference and help you have a positive and safe birth experience. The birthing person’s and baby’s positions are vital factors in labor progression. My continuing education with Spinning Babies and using Peanut Balls can be very beneficial during all stages of labor and medicated labors and births.

Would I benefit from having a doula during a cesarean birth?

Yes. A labor doula can provide you with pregnancy education (nutrition, exercise, wishes, etc.). On the day of the cesarean, they can support you and your partner before and after the birth. After the birth, they can help you establish breastfeeding/chestfeeding if that is in your plan. A postpartum doula can support you during your healing. They can help with newborn care, help with feeding or bringing your newborn to you for feeding, household tasks, and meals.

Does insurance cover the costs of doulas?

While insurance does not cover the costs of doulas, you can apply for reimbursement through your insurance.
I will help you with the process. In addition, you can use your HSA/FSA to make your payment.

Can the doula do medical tasks for me?

No. I cannot do medical tasks, which include blood pressure readings, glucose level testing, temperature readings, cervical exams, etc.

Can a doula deliver my baby?

A doula is not a medical provider. I do not facilitate any medical portions of labor and delivery. However, you can choose to have a doula or someone catch your baby under the guidance and assistance of your medical care provider.

Can the doula drive my car?

No. According to MaternityWise Doula guidelines, I cannot drive a client’s car.

Can the doula care for my pets?

No. According to MaternityWise Doula guidelines, I cannot care for your pets.

Did the doula receive the COVID-19 vaccines?

Yes. I have received COVID-19 vaccines. I also take new boosters as they become available. I stay up-to-date with other vaccines, including Tdap, Flu, etc.
